Parma is a city that has retained its rich cultural and artistic heritage.
As a result, visitors cannot fail to be impressed by the size and scope of the collections held by the city's museums.
As well as works of art, those visiting the museums in Parma can browse among exhibits, which range from old printing presses and fashion sketches, to early Christian mosaics and archaeological finds.

Founded by Glauco Lombardi, the Museo di Glauco Lombardi houses an impressive collection of unusual exhibits. These include paintings and other objects that relate to Maria Luigia of Habsburg and her first husband, Napoleon Bonaparte, as well as objects which can be traced back to the Duchy of Parma back in the 18th century.

This museum was originally opened in order to house the finds from an archaeological excavation dig at the site of Roman Velleja. During the 19th century, however, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale fell victim to French ambitions and many of the most valuable pieces were removed. Later returned to the city, Parma's archaeological museum is now widely recognized as one of the main centres for paleontological study in Italy. On the first floor are exhibits from outside the province, whilst the second floor contains prehistoric and Roman remains from the area around the city itself.

Located within the cellars of a former bishop's palace, the exhibits at the Museo Diocesano include statues from Parma's cathedral, as well as an early Christian mosaic. The latter was unearthed from underneath the Piazza del Duomo.

Parma's Museo Bodoniano can be found on the top floor of the Palazzo della Pilotta. It is devoted to the work of one Giambattista Bodoni, who ran a printing house in the 18th century. Exhibits include some of the stamps and stencils once used by the actual press.
